Nowadays, water as energy presents one of the most important sources of electrical energy production.
According to United Nations data, hydro power is the most important renewable source of energy used around the world. It is predicted that hydro power reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 10% by replacing other ways of electricity production. For this reason hydro power represents one of the main ways of reducing greenhouse gas effects, and it contributes to more efficient use of energy and its conservation. For the future development of hydro power utilization there is considerable potential in the renewal and upgrade of existing systems, as well as in the construction of new ones.
Some organizations only consider small hydro power plants as renewable, while sometimes more attention is given to the integration of new renewable resources, which can require a lot of effort. Small hydro power plants as such do not represent new technology. The usual medium-sized and large hydro power plants, which are much more important in the global production of electrical energy, are frequently ignored due to their significant environmental intervention, which results in a drastic change in the appearance of the landscape and the altered habitat of aquatic and riparian animals. Small hydro power plants (SHPP) are power plants that have a small specified power. Members of the European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA) and the European Commission have accepted a limit for SHPPs as 10 MW of installed power. In Slovenia, SHPPs have a combined installed power of 100 MW and produce on average 60GWh of electrical energy.

A considerable emphasis is on SHPPs. The potential is huge. They can be put in different locations, even micro-locations. The difference between large and small hydro power plants is huge. With large hydro power plants it is necessary to obstruct the river in order to produce energy; big dams are built to create artificial water pressure. With small hydro power plants we can take advantage of the free water flow of rivers and streams. The difference is also in the equipment, particularly easier maintenance (power plants can be maintained by non-professionals), simplicity, great efficiency and reliability. For small hydro power plants we can install low pressure or high pressure turbines.
